Alejandro Sanz: His music and worldwide success

 Por  Veronique de Miguel

Alejandro Sanz is one of the most internationally recognized Latin artists. Composer and lyricist of all his songs, he has sold more than 22 million records to date. He is the Spanish artist with the greatest number of Grammy awards; 16 Latin and three American, with 15 published albums, nine of them studio albums. All of them have gone Platinum in Spain, Latin America and the United States.
The 44-year-old singer has collaborated with artists like Shakira, Alicia Keys, The Corrs, René de Calle 13, Joaquin Sabina, Dani Martin, Ivete Sangalo and the legendary Tony Bennett, among others.

From Madrid to worldwide success

Alejandro Sanchez Pizarro was born in Madrid in 1968 but he has a sweet and sensual Andalusian accent in his songs that comes from his parents, both Andalusians, and which likely feeds his fans’ infatuation. This singer, musician and Spanish composer is one of the pop artists with the greatest international reputations. He has obtained the most important awards including the Ondas, Amigo, Grammy- and several Platinum as well as national and foreign Golden Records.
Alejandro Sanz’s (his stage name) love for music is a familiar inheritance: his father was a member of two musical groups and his Godfather is the composer Manuel Alexander. When he was no older than seven years old, little Alejandro already knew how to play the guitar and he soon began to compose as well. When he was 14 years old, his family moved to the district of Moratalaz (Madrid, Spain) and he began to associate with flamenco atmospheres, which he now considers his origins. Thus, he made his first artistic steps. Still in the heat of adolescence, Sanz decided that he wanted to dedicate himself completely to music and so he ran away from home several times. He made his way across the different tourist stops along the Andalusian coast with his guitar, singing in pubs and restaurants in exchange for a plate of food. He began to take guitar lessons and soon he found some jobs in recording studios, where he was hired to create the chorus and be a musical support for singers.

Alejandro Sanz’s first payment as a “music professional” came shortly before he made his first record, “Los chulos son pa cuidarlos,” that was created almost inadvertently. He began composing lyrics and tunes for other groups and singers at the same time he started in the production field with Laventura group.
“Viviendo deprisa” (“Living Quickly”) in 1991 was his first success in the business and the singer became an immediate icon for teenagers, with a million records sold and seven Platinum discs. His first success was followed by “Si tú me miras” (“If You Watch Me”) in 1993, “Básico” (“Basic”) in 1994 and “Alejandro Sanz III” in 1995. When his music began to be widely liked, sold worldwide and his artistic ability was an unquestionable fact, he took care of his parents and bought his dad a Mercedes Benz, created a hair salon for his mother and settled them into a luxurious house of over 6,000 square feet in Madrid.
In 1997, Sanz debuted “Corazón Partío” (“Broken Heart”) within the record “More,” that went No. 1 in all Hispanic countries and turned Alejandro Sanz into one of the most awarded singers and composers of recent history in Spanish language music.

From then on, he began to win awards for his work including four Grammies (best recording, album of the year, best song and best male artist pop album) in the second Latin edition and three awards (best recording, best album and best song) in the third Latin edition of the awards in 2002. In February 2004, Sanz obtained another Grammy for the best Latin pop album with “No es lo mismo” (“It Is Not The Same”).

At the moment: ‘La música no se toca’

After signing with Universal Music Group, Alejandro Sanz returned to the musical scene in June of 2012 with “No me compares” (“Do Not Compare Me” the first single off his new album “La música no se toca”, which boasted a music video directed by American director Ethan Lader. This new production, recorded in Miami, is directed and produced by Sanz himself with the Colombian producer Julio Reyes Copello.
Alejandro Sanz is one of a special few Spanish artists who have crossed borders filling the international musical space and appeal of Latin talent and sensuality. He is sure to be noted as one of the most important icons in Latin Music in history.
